Albano Morandi

Biography

Albano Morandi was born in Salò on October 8, 1958. After attending the Artistic High School, he obtained a diploma in Set Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, studying under Toti Scialoja and Alberto Boatto. Morandi recalls that choosing Set Design allowed him to pursue a more structured study, closely aligned with his idea of contemporary art, as it represents the element that unites multiple artistic disciplines: music, painting, theater, and literature.
In 1981, his deep passion for theater, particularly for the works of Samuel Beckett, led him to found the “Teatro dell’Evidenza”, through which he staged various productions. The concept of evidence became the first essential and recurring element in Morandi’s artistic journey: highlighting the reality of the objects around us. The artist often recalls a phrase from one of Beckett’s novels that deeply resonates with him: “There is absolutely nothing unusual here as far as I can see. And yet I burn with curiosity and wonder.”
In 1984, Morandi held his first solo exhibition, titled Porta delle stelle, at the Centro d’Arte Santelmo in Salò, showcasing watercolors on prepared paper mounted on walls. A few years later, he created the series Paesaggi allucinati, a clear tribute to Osvaldo Licini, and Fiori assenti. In 1986, he participated in the XI Quadriennale di Roma, where he introduced the Formichieri Trampolieri, a series featuring a white creature depicted from various perspectives—front, top, and side—always set against a black background.
Between 1987 and 1988, he began creating his first sculptural objects, which he humorously called Disegno capitello colonna. The abstract forms present on the surface of these sculptures were not created in relief but rather highlighted through color, emerging from the background in negative. His artistic production continued to evolve in the early 1990s, introducing the Kamikaze series, considered a further development of Fiori Assenti. These works took on a more object-based approach, utilizing supports such as tables, boxes, and pallets.
In 1994, he began working on his first large-scale environmental installations, with the series Se solo potessimo cadere. In 1996, at the XII Quadriennale di Roma, he presented Officium, a monumental wall installation composed of multiple painted objects accompanied by six sculptures arranged in a row on a pedestal. This period marked the beginning of what Morandi calls Gesti Quotidiani (Daily Gestures)—small, repurposed objects such as old frames, chalkboards, notebooks, discarded wooden or cardboard boxes. Like a collector, he gathers, preserves, and reinterprets these materials, giving them a “new life.”
Morandi transforms these objects—stripped of their original function—into sculptural forms, offering the viewer a new perspective that evokes both recognition and surprise. These works contain an explicit lyrical component, enhanced by his ability to arrange small forms within a larger composition, creating a strong emotional impact on the observer. His ability to continuously explore new artistic directions while maintaining coherence and harmony is a defining characteristic of his work.
As critics have noted, Morandi’s artistic project is to use “the world of forms to transfigure the world of objects.” His career includes participation in two editions of the Quadriennale di Roma (1986 and 1996), winning first prize (ex aequo) at the 40th Premio Nazionale d’Arte Suzzara (2000), and contributing to the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007) in the collateral event JOSEPH BEUYS DIFESA DELLA NATURA. He has exhibited extensively in major cities across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
For over twenty-five years, he has curated exhibitions on behalf of various public institutions and associations. His most notable theatrical and performative collaborations include projects with composers Antonio Giacometti, Giancarlo Facchinetti, and Francesco Pennisi; musicians Tristan Honsinger, Gianluigi Trovesi, Luca Formentini, and Walter Beltrami; poets Attilio Lolini and Flavio Ermini; and directors Lorenzo Vitalone, Mariano D’Ammacco, and Mauro Avogadro.
He has taught Set Design and Painting at the Accademia Cignaroli in Verona, LABA – Libera Accademia di Belle Arti, and the Accademia di Belle Arti SantaGiulia in Brescia. Albano Morandi lives and works in Raffa di Puegnago (BS).
