Journeys of color
Paul Gauguin arrived in Tahiti for the first time in 1891 and remained there untilHe came to this place so far from his native Paris in search of those primordial and archetypal forms, those colors and those people closest to nature that he wanted to represent in his art, pursuing his ideal approach to a “Paradise on Earth.” To get closer to this goal, he decided to live like the natives and study their customs and traditions, research that led him to engage with other scholars and writers such as Marc Chadourne and Maurice Guierre and to illustrate their book Marehurehu. Whether physical or simply mental, the journey to find sources of inspiration and images to transpose into one’s own works is a practice still in use today.
This is why we have decided to bring together here the works of three artists who, albeit in different ways, make travel part of their research practice and to have them dialogue with an illustrated publication by the French master.
For Paola Alborghetti, travel is physical, in search of places, people, and stories to sublimate, transform, and bring back to the canvas, with gestures and colors in an attempt to transpose the emotions they evoke.
Chuck Drake, on the other hand, travels back in time in his own memory, rediscovering shapes and colors that he recomposes in his paintings in formally composed compositions that are
vibrant in their brushstrokes and chromatic contrasts. Paolo Tosti travels through matter, the primordial matter of Mother Earth represented by
stone, which he studies, excavates, and works, transforming it into a combination of solids and voids,
ordering disorder and giving life to new forms and architectures.
Artists’ journeys. Journeys of color.
Artists on display

Paola Alborghetti, The dance of feelings 011, 2023, acrylic on canvas, 100 x 90 cm
PAOLA ALBORGHETTI (1975. Lives and works between Dresden and Valborna (Como)).
Her paintings and installations arise from her encounters with places, stories, and signs. For her, travel is not just a means of getting from one place to another, but an artistic practice: a
process of gathering, translating, and condensing.
From her encounters with different territories, cities, and geographical experiences in her daily life, she draws symbols and personal experiences, which she reworks and transforms
into her own visual language.

Paolo Tosti, Ritratto Industriale III, 2006, Samarkand Stone, cm 76 x 32 x 50,5
PAOLO TOSTI (1969. Lives and works in Fano).
The artist works on the impossibility of defining reality as stable and absolute, a compressed and structurally fragmented reality.
He removes material from a single block of stone to obtain the shape, and adds pigment to “eliminate” it in a space-time journey inside and outside space and shapes.

Chuck Drake, 202436, 2024, Acrylic on canvas, 100 x 70cm
CHUCK DRAKE (1959. Lives and works in Zurich).
The creations of Drake, the pseudonym under which the Swiss artist paints, arise from a relentless and open exploration that delves into themes often rooted in memory. These memories of shapes, places, and spaces serve as
windows onto emotions, connecting the artist’s inner world with that of the viewer. His approach to painting is varied and does not correspond to a single canon, thus pursuing the best representation for each of the various human emotions in all their infinite nuances.
