Philippe Chitarrini

Biography

Philippe Chitarrini, born in 1966, is a minimalist French visual artist renowned for his radical approach to painting and sculpture. He studied Visual Arts and Art History at the University of Aix-en-Provence and graduated from ESAAIX (Ecole Supérieure d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence). Currently, he divides his time between the south of France and Hangzhou, China, where he teaches at the prestigious China Academy of Art (CAA).
Chitarrini’s work is defined by a striking interplay between matte and shiny surfaces. The matte areas exude a sense of calm and introspection, while the shiny, mirror-like elements actively engage with their surroundings, reflecting the environment and introducing a subtle, passive figurative dimension. This deliberate interaction incorporates the exhibition space—be it serene or dynamic, natural or architectural—into the artwork itself, creating a fluid dialogue between the piece and its context.
